Soba Maruki reviews
I tried Tanuki hot soba. Soup is not so hot. I recommend cold soba.
Ordered Ten-Don and could not even finish it as the tempura sauce on the rice was too salty. Rice came warm but not the tempura. The texture of the Ebi tempura is still acceptable whereas the vegetables tempura soggy. The person manning the …

Located within Hokkaido Marche at Basement 2 of Orchard Central, next to the elevators, is Soba Maruki that specialises in serving Soba and Udon with Tempura style food. The original Soba Maruki is from Sapporo, Hokkaido, and has been quite successful, and this outlet has been around for a few years now, I popped by during lunch hour out of curiosity, and also because my wife likes Soba. The eatery is kiosk style, meaning its right out in the open with no walls separating the seating area from the hustle and bustle of the mall. The food is casual in nature, with a small number of items on the menu, which can be seen on display. The menu has clear pictures with descriptions of each dish. It was a weekday and there was a good crowd in the mall, I would say that it was possible to find seating. But I would expect it could be crowded during weekends. Our orders were served quite promptly; everything was heated as for your usual Tempura fare. I tried the Soba Maruki Set ($9.90), while my wife had the Tempura Udon Set ($9.90). The set comes with a bowl of soup, and then a serving of noodles with Tempura. For the Soba, I chose plain soup and cold noodles, as I felt like some chilled noodles. There were about 6 Tempura items with different vegetables in each set. I didn't think too much about the quality, I only paid a bit more than $4 for the Soba. But I really enjoyed my wife's Udon, that the thick Udon noodles was really good, and the soup was tasty. The Tempura items seemed fresh, and they were not drenched with oil. Good things about this eatery: 1. Quick Service 2. The soup was light but tasty. 3. Noodles were good. Bad things about this eatery: 1. It was a bit too hot in there due to the open space Overall I would say this is a good kiosk to try Soba and Udon, its not fine dining, and its more functional, but it was good enough for our casual lunch. I think the price is very reasonable for the portions.
The soba noodles were cooked just right and had a nice texture. The broth was flavorful and went well with the noodles. The tempura was crispy and not greasy. Overall, a satisfying meal and good value for money. The only downside was the lack of seating space, as it is just a small kiosk in a busy mall.
I had the cold soba and it was refreshing. The noodles were firm and had a nice bite to them. The tempura was crispy and not too oily. The portion size was decent for the price. The only drawback was the limited seating available.
I ordered the tempura udon and it was disappointing. The noodles were overcooked and mushy, while the tempura was soggy. The broth lacked flavor and was too salty. The only saving grace was the price, which was relatively cheap.
I went to Soba Maruki for lunch and ordered the Tanuki hot soba. The soup was lukewarm and lacked flavor. The soba noodles were overcooked and soft. The tempura was greasy and tasted stale. Overall, a disappointing meal.
